Helicity (named for a physics phenomenon) has more atmospheric knowledge than most adults, which makes her an admirable heroine and comes in handy as it seems there is always a weather-related catastrophe in the works. While the writing here tends toward the stodgy, ABC News Chief meteorologist Zee knows her weather, and she concocts an enjoyably turbulent meteorological adventure.
In between dealing with natural disasters, Helicity attempts to wade through typical teen drama in the love department and to figure out how to help her opioid-addicted older brother. She may have thought her storm-chasing days were over, but the Gulf brings its own weather challenges. After a day in the hospital, she, her mom, and Sam make the two-day drive back to Western Michigan.
She somehow manages to keep herself safe, and to even rescue a lost dog in the process. After a devastating tornado and flash flood destroyed her family's home in Michigan, left her mentor in a coma, and strained her relationship with her brother, fourteen-year-old Helicity is headed to Texas to stay with her best friend Mia and her aunt who owns a beachside bed and breakfast. Battered, bruised, but alive, Helicity Dunlap rides out a hurricane in the Bolivar Peninsula Lighthouse in Texas.
